Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a music major to play in any of the ensembles?

No! Anyone enrolled at UNLV can audition and be a member of any of the ensembles. In fact, many of our ensembles, like the marching band, are comprised of mostly non-majors.

When are auditions for the bands?

The UNLV Wind Orchestra holds virtual auditions in August before the start of the fall semester, and the UNLV Symphonic Winds holds in-person auditions at the end of the fall semester.

Do I need to be a music major to receive music scholarship?

No! Many students at UNLV receive music scholarships without being a music major.

Is it possible to work part-time and be in the marching band?

Yes! While members are not excused from games or rehearsals for work related reasons, many students are able to craft their work schedules around the schedule of the marching band.

What is the instrumentation of the marching band?

We use the following instruments: flutes and piccolos, clarinets, alto and tenor saxophones, mellophones, trumpets, trombones, euphoniums, sousaphones, and percussion. The percussion section is comprised of snare drums, tenor drums, cymbals, and bass drums.  Please note that we do not use a color guard or a percussion pit.

When is band camp?

Band camp is one week before the start of the Fall semester.
